Doug Baum, Texas Camel Corps
We decided to jump ahead yesterday from Polly's Chapel to the Bandera camp (the home of Mr. John Bruce) to avoid the mud and potentially-flooded Privilege Creek, so we trailered over that way. The arena there was nice and we only got a slight shower, so the camels were a bit easier to clean, being more or less dry. Kay Johnson, of Clifton, Texas, joined us the night before and we were sure glad she did. Kay is a high school teacher and really brought some "class" to us ruffians! The visit to Bandera was incredible. What a response...We had the honor of receiving a proclamation from Bandera County Judge Richard Evans proclaiming it "Texas Camel Corps Day". WOW! There were a few hundred folks at the court house and riding into the downtown area we probably saw another couple of hundred on the streets. From there we went to the Frontier Times Museum where we met another few hundred folks as we visited with the public until about 4 or so. From there we headed to the Mason Fork Ranch, where we were guests of Mr. Jules Jourde. The accommodations for our last night on the trail would be the best of the entire trip. The camels had a 12-acre field and fellas and I (Kay headed home this evening) stayed in the ranch bunkhouse. Real beds, real pillows and....REAL SHOWERS! We'd only had those once before while in Cuero (thanks to the Sheriff's Department). I wasn't quite sure how to behave indoors again. Also yesterday young Bradley Gonzales, nephew of group member Frank Gonzales joined back up. He'd been with us in Nixon, Texas earlier and has turned into a heck of a camel handler. We were all invited for dinner tonight with Pat Harrison from Frontier Times Museum and the aforementioned Mr. Jourde. Looking forward to tomorrow's ride into Camp Verde!
