Doug Baum – Texas Camel Corps – We made 5.5 miles today on foot between Stockdale and LaVernia. Leaving Stockdale we passed by a nursing home at the request of Renee Vickers who took such good care of us yesterday. We then passed through downtown Stockdale joining up with US 87 where we were a big hit with traffic. Swedish journalist Henrik Fagerstrom and wife Karen, also a journalist, hoofed it the entire 3 hours today. Wonderful folks, these two, and we enjoyed their company today. At our stop on 87, we were met by Mrs. Norma Hyatt of Adkins, Texas. Mrs. Hyatt is the granddaughter of Charles Brett who is quoted in Chris Emmett’s Texas Camel Tales as having seen two shipments of camels unloaded at Indianola. Mrs. Hyatt showed us a letter from Emmett to her grandfather thanking him for his assistance with his book. It was a real delight to know that Mrs. Hyatt took the time to track us down and share her family’s history with us. Once in LaVernia we were greeted by Mr. Kane Mattke who arranged for our stay at the Chamber of Commerce Hall. Big thanks to Kane. Thanks also goes out to Ghislaine Mathieu for the lemon meringue pie, and also to her daughter for the fresh produce and Hackberry limbs. I think the Hackberry limbs were for the camels; we might split the produce with them , though. Another highlight today was meeting Stephen F. Austin, a true descendant of the father of Texas and one of many relatives who share this famous name. Thanks also go out to young Destiny for the apples she brought the camels. We’re going to bed early tonight as we have to fight San Antonio traffic in the morning to get the camels downtown to the Alamo.

Jim Hale – American Camel Company – We met so many wonderful people on the road today.

Gil Hernandez – San Antonio, Texas – Hola a todos mis amigos y mi familia en San Quilmas. Indians used to call San Antonio this.

Frank Gonzales – Smiley, Texas - Awesome day! A lot of history and a lot of new friends on the trail.

Ernest Geigenmiller – San Antonio, Texas – It’s been fun ever since we left, and the closer we get to our destination, it is getting better and better. If anybody wants to follow the camel trail, just follow the camel droppings down the road...they cannot miss us.
