Doug Baum – Texas Camel Corps – All the caravaneers are going to bed early tonight so I will paraphrase for all of us. The highlight today was trekking up FM 1107 from Pandora to Stockdale and seeing the look on children’s faces on this stretch of rural road. The kids came running out of their houses and all seemed very excited to meet the camels. We were greeted at the Stockdale Chamber of Commerce Arena by numerous people including Renee Vickers and others from the Stockdale Mission and San Antonio Living History Association. Renee and friends welcomed us to their town with an incredible meal. Shortly after, though, the Mathis family of Venus, Texas and Terri Jo Ryan of the Waco Tribune Herald had to leave our group. Saying goodbye was very sad as we had really enjoyed their company. Trekker of the Day Award goes to young Bradley, nephew of group member Frank Gonzales. Bradley joined up with us this morning while on school holiday but will rejoin the Drive as soon as school lets out on Wednesday. Not long after arriving in Stockdale, the heavens poured down upon us. It was a beautiful rain, punctuated by an equally impressive rainbow. Tomorrow’s movement might be hampered by the weather, but we will just have to wait and see. Today’s mileage; 6 miles in 3 hours, with liberal rests stops. Camels performed wonderfully. Paisley Mathis proved herself to be an apt rider, bringing in Gobi for the last mile or so.
