Doug Baum – Texas Camel Corps – Today we were the guests of Sheriff Zavesky at the Cuero Rotary Club. We were honored to have lunch with this organization and were asked to give a half-hour presentation on the Sesquesentiel Camel Drive. The Rotarians were beyond warm and hospitable and we sure enjoyed our time with them. In Chris Emmett’s book Texas Camel Tales he mentions the family names Lewis, Hozheuser, Miller, and Kleinecke. In an interview last week with the Cuero newspaper, I had put out the word that we would like to meet descendants of any of these families. Looks like word spread; we met a half dozen Kleineckes this afternoon. None of them knew that their ancestor Mary, then a little girl, has seen the original US Army camel offloaded in May of 1856 connecting the modern Kleineckes with their own family history has been the greatest highlight of the Drive for me so far. We marked the occasion with pictures of numerous Kleinecke family members with our camels. Big thanks go out today to Genevia Hahn and David Kleinecke for a most welcomed barbecue dinner for the members of the Drive. We would also like to say thanks to Carver Richards, President of the Cuero Rotary Club for hosting us at today’s rotary meeting. Prior to the beginning of the Drive, Gil T. Hernandez made a camel brand which we’ve been heating up and branding small pieces of wood with. We presented both Sheriff Zavesky and Rotary Club President Richards with brandings as a gesture of thanks for their hospitality. Also today we gave a phone interview to Mike Rogers of KRLD radio in Dallas. Tomorrow the San Antonio Express News will be out to cover our visit to the Cuero Nursing and Rehab Center. The other guys and I could not be more pleased with the media’s interest in the Drive and their coverage is key to the Camel Drive’s success.
Jim Hale – American Camel Company – The people of Cuero are fantastic hosts. Beautiful town.
Ernest Geigenmiller - The hospitality today was awesome. The looks in the kid’s eyes today was even greater...happy kids.
Gil T. Hernandez - Viva el Texas Camel Corps.
PS – Today was Jim’s birthday, he turned 38 and Ernest, Gil, and I agreed to get him a birthday cake. Good luck trying to find a camel theme cake in Cuero, Texas. The gal in the bakery, though, was able to freehand a camel and scatter mini chocolate chips behind it. We all went for the “camel droppings” first. Happy birthday Jim, I’m sure glad I’m out here with you on this.
