"HOLD YOUR HORSES, THE CAMELS ARE ON THE MOVE!"

May 22 and 23, 2006

Doug Baum – Texas Camel Corps – Visiting with the school kids at O’Conner Elementary and at the K-12 campus in Louise, was really great. The kids all seemed to appreciate their area’s connection to the historic Camel Corps. As we leave Victoria, and head toward Cuero, it’s sad to say goodbye to D’Ann and Frank H. as well as the Cole family ranch where we camped the last two nights, but it’s time to move on. Our most sincere thanks go out to both Gayles and Linda at the Region 3 Education Service Center, they really made our time in Victoria wonderful and helped up connect with the school kids these past two days. I’m personally looking forward to getting to Cuero to try and connect some camel history with local families like the Millers, Kleineckes, and Holzheusers. These are families mentioned in the book Texas Camel Tales as having had some association with the historic Camel Corps and I’m hoping to find some descendants of theirs. Something exciting may happen on the trail tomorrow – we may have some aerial photographs of the Drive taken.

Jim Hale – American Camel Company – Big Lake, TX - The school kids were great, they made the whole trip so far. Their enthusiasm and interest in the camels really impressed me.

Ernest Geigenmiller – San Antonio, TX - Monday at O’Conner Elementary and Tuesday at the school in Louise while working with the kids, the camels really made their eyes open up. They never realized something like this happened in their own neighborhood. The kids asked many of the same questions.

Gil T. Hernandez – San Antonio, TX - Excellent opportunity to educate the school kids and part of the public with a good understanding of their concept of camels in Texas. I had a wonderful time and enjoyed their dear company.
